Last weekend I took these pics for well-known local artist and UTAS honcho John Vella for his new work FIT(7___)

They’re hanging at the Moonah Arts Centre as part of the Stigma Research Lab exhibition.

From John’s artist statement:

“A series of main streets/shopping centres in 8 diverse suburbs were videoed at the same time on the same day for one hour. The videos were examined and the various details of clothing and hairstyles etc. catalouged so as to determine the common ‘fashion’ specific to that place. The artist then purchased these clothes and dressed himself, and his family, according to each specific survey/ postcode.”

His aim was to “comment on the pervasive nature of stigma in our lives; be it in relation to clothing, your job, hair styles, the street or suburb you live in etc., and highlight how we are essentially held captive by certain ways of relating/thinking instilled in, and on us, from before we could really make up our own minds.”

Interesting stuff.

The exhibition also features work by Scot Cottrell and Philippa Steele.

Such a great study of ‘fashion’. Love the concept.
